Best Wood for Speaker Cabinets

For cabinets that get loaded, stacked and rained on, the best wood for speaker cabinets is birch plywood. Poplar ply trades stiffness for a much lighter sheet, MDF only makes sense for boxes that never move, and OSB is out. Most 18" sub cabs are 18 mm board, with 15 mm where weight matters and the bracing is good.

Sheet weights are density × volume (0.0536 m³ for an 18 mm full sheet). Metsä's published figure for 18 mm birch is 12.2 kg/m², which gives the same 36 kg.

Birch plywood

Metsä's 18 mm birch ply has 13 plies with alternating grain. That cross-grain build gives stiffness in both directions and lets screws bite in the edge as well as the face. Corners dent rather than crumble. Good grades have few voids in the core, which matters for airtight joints. The cost is price and weight: 36 kg per sheet before you cut it.

Poplar plywood

At 437 kg/m³, poplar ply is about 36% lighter than birch: roughly 13 kg saved per full sheet. That is a real gain on a box carried up stairs. It is softer and less stiff, so brace more and do not rely on wood screws for driver bolts or hardware: use T-nuts or threaded inserts.

MDF

MDF is flat, consistent, cheap to machine and well damped, which is why hi-fi uses it. For PA it is the heaviest option in the table, its corners break when knocked, it holds screws poorly in its edges and it swells when wet. Finsa's declared thickness swelling for its moisture-resistant grade is 8%; Medite MR is specified at 7% maximum. Fine for a fixed install. Wrong for a rig that goes out every weekend.

OSB and chipboard

OSB has a rough face and uneven density across the sheet, which makes stiff, airtight, neat joints harder. Chipboard has MDF's weaknesses without its consistency. Neither belongs in a speaker cab.

Thickness

Build to the thickness the plan specifies. Published designs, including those on our designs page, assume one thickness; changing it moves internal dimensions and volume, and with them the cabinet tuning.

Weight in practice

Add the driver to the wood: the WM1850/8 is 20 kg on its own. A large scoop in 18 mm birch plus driver is a two-person lift at minimum. Fit proper handles and, on big cabs, castors. See loading and stacking safely.

Making any wood last

Seal edges and outside faces with paint or a covering, fit corner protectors and keep the base off wet floors. See finishing speaker cabinets. Inside, glue joints and bracing do more for the sound than the choice between two decent plywoods: bracing and sealing cabinets.

Questions

Is MDF or plywood better for speaker boxes?

Plywood, for anything that moves. 18 mm birch ply at about 680 kg/m³ is lighter than MDF at about 730 to 745 kg/m³, holds screws in its edges and copes with knocks and damp. MDF suits cabinets that stay in one place.

How heavy is a sheet of 18 mm birch plywood?

About 36 kg for a full 2440 × 1220 mm sheet, based on Metsä's published 12.2 kg/m². Poplar ply at 437 kg/m³ is roughly 23 kg; moisture-resistant MDF roughly 39 kg.

What thickness plywood should I use for a subwoofer box?

18 mm is the usual choice for 18 inch sub cabinets. 15 mm saves about 16% of the panel weight and can work with good bracing. Always build to the thickness in your plan, because it changes the internal volume.

Is poplar plywood good for speaker cabinets?

For lighter cabinets, yes. It is about a third lighter than birch but softer and less stiff, so add bracing and use T-nuts or threaded inserts for driver and hardware fixings.
